ولمand never يُرَwas seen مَعشرٌa band of people فيamong الناسhumankind مُردٌbeardless
ولم يُرَ مَعشرٌ في الناس مُردٌ
سمعتُI heard بهمof them ولاnor صُهبُtawny السِّبالِthe mustaches
سمعتُ بهم ولا صُهبُ السِّبالِ
No band among men was ever seen, beardless—
No tribe among men have I seen as unruly as them
that I had heard of—or tawny-mustached—
I have heard of them, but not seen a trace
تُقَلَّبُis tossed about بالسِّياطby the whips لهاit has نَحِيطٌa wheeze
تُقَلَّبُ بالسِّياط لها نَحِيطٌ
نَحِيطَthe wheezing of المُحرَضاتِthose wasted by illness منfrom السُّعَالِcoughing
نَحِيطَ المُحرَضاتِ من السُّعَالِ
tossed about by whips, wheezing
They are turned over with whips which surround them
with the wheeze of those wasted away by coughing.
Surrounding the incited ones with coughing fits
وكانand was مُنَاهُمُtheir wish أنto يَلحقوناcatch up with us
وكان مُنَاهُمُ أن يَلحقونا
ببطنِin the valley of قَضِيبَQaḍīb فيin شهرٍa month حَلالِpermitting warfare
ببطنِ قَضِيبَ في شهرٍ حَلالِ
And their wish was to catch up with us
And their intent was to catch up with us
in the valley of Qaḍīb, in a month when fighting was permitted.
