And there is no tribe between Marr and ʿĀlij

and Abyan but ranges far among the wanderers,

except that in Aṣwāt, then Aʿquq, there has always been

a company of its people who have not moved away.

We found there the two ʿAmrs: ʿAmr of ʿUdayya

and ʿAmr son of ʿAmr; and in spacious encampments

we found the sons of ʿAmr, eighty horsemen,

confronting a scowling face of night.

And the ʿUdāʾiyyūn were beneath their spears—

the spears of the sons of ʿAmr—and, on the morning of the dawn raids,

    وما كان فيهم فارسٌ غيرُ جانحِ

    drawn up against in-laws, kinsfolk, and neighbors;

and every horseman among them leaned aside.

So, had you been among the sons of ʿAmr son of ʿĀmir,

you would have been noble; but you are of Jāmiḥ’s line.
