أَبَنيO sons of زيادٍZiyad أنتُمُyou فيamong قومكُمyour people
ذَنَبٌa tail ونحنُand we فُروعُbranches أَصلٍa root طَيِّبٍnoble
O sons of Ziyad, among your people you are
You are the sons of Ziyad among your people
A tail, while we are branches of a noble root.
A sin, while we are branches of a good root
نَصِلُwe join الخميسَthe army إلىto الخميسthe army وأنتمُand you
بالقَهرِat al-Qahr بينbetween مُرَبِّقٍMurabbiq ومُكَلِّبِand Mukallib
We join army to army, while you
We fight on Thursday to Thursday while you
Are at al-Qahr, between Murabbiq and Mukallib.
By force between a fortress and hunting dogs
لاdo not تَحسَبُنَّsuppose بنيsons of كُحَيلَةَKuhayla حَربَناwar with us
سَوقَdriving الحميرِthe donkeys بجَأبَةٍat Ja'ba فالكوكبِand then al-Kawkab
Do not suppose, sons of Kuhayla, that war with us
Do not think, O sons of Kuhaylah, our war
Is driving donkeys at Ja'ba and then al-Kawkab.
Is like driving donkeys in the star constellations
حُيُدٌthose who shun عنaway from المعروفِnoble deeds سَعيُthe pursuit of أبيهِمُtheir father
طَلَبُhunting الوُعولِthe ibex بوَفضَةٍwith a quiver وَبأكلُبِand with hounds
They shun noble deeds; their father's pursuit
Deviating from kindness was the quest of their father
Was hunting ibex with a quiver and hounds,
Seeking marriage payments in silver and dogs
حتىuntil تَكَهَّنَhe practiced soothsaying بعدafter شَيبٍgray hair شاملٍall-encompassing
تَرحاًwoe لهto him منwhat a كاهنٍsoothsayer مُتَكَذِّبِlying
Until he took to soothsaying after his hair had gone wholly gray.
Until after encompassing gray hair
Woe to him—what a lying soothsayer!
He supposed an omen from a deceitful fortuneteller
لمّاwhen رأونيthey saw me فيat الكَتيفةِal-Katifa مُقبلاًadvancing
وَسطَamid الكتيبةِthe battalion مثلَlike ضوءِthe light of الكوكبِthe star
When they saw me advancing at al-Katifa,
When they saw me approaching in the battalion
Amid the battalion, like the light of a star,
Among the troops like the light of a star
يَختَبُّtrots بيcarrying me العَطَّافُal-ʿAttaf حولَaround بُيوتِهمtheir homes
ليستis not عداوتُناour enmity كبرقِlike the lightning of الخُلَّبِrainless clouds
Al-ʿAttaf trotting with me around their homes—
The Ataff peek around their homes at me
Our enmity is not like lightning from rainless clouds—
Our enmity is not like the flickering of fireflies
واستيقنواand they became certain منّاfrom us بوَقعٍthrough a blow صادقٍtrue
هَرَبواthey fled وليسand it was not أوانَthe proper time ساعةِan hour of مَهرَبِescape
And were convinced by a real blow from us,
And they were certain from us with a true occurrence
They fled, though it was no time for escape.
They fled, and it was not yet the hour of flight
تَركواthey left السَّوامَthe grazing livestock لناto us وكلَّand every خَريدةٍshy maiden
بيضاءَfair-skinned خَرعَبَةٍtall and supple وأُخرىand another ثَيِّبِnon-virgin woman
They left the grazing herds to us, and every shy maiden,
They left the herds to us and every white
Fair-skinned, tall and supple, and another who was no virgin.
Frightened ewe and another experienced one
عَجَّتwailed نساءُthe women of بنيthe sons of زيادٍZiyad عَجَّةًa loud wail
كَعَجِيجِlike the wailing of نِسوَتِناour women غداةَon the morning of الأَرنَبِal-Arnab
The women of the sons of Ziyad raised a wail,
The women of the sons of Ziyad complained
Like our women's wailing on the morning of al-Arnab.
Like the cries of our women the morning after prey
