O Fatim, had you been present in the hollow of Khabt,

when the lion met your brother Bishr,

then you would have seen a lion seeking a lion,

    a thick-necked lion seeking a lion.

He swaggered when my colt drew back from him

out of fear; so I said, 'May you be hamstrung, colt!

Set my feet upon the earth's back, for I

have found the earth's back steadier than yours.'

And I said to him, as he bared blades,

    sharpened, and a scowling face,

vaunting his claw and a fang's keen edge,

and glances you would take for embers,

while in my right hand was a keen-edged sword, marked

on its striking edge by clashes with adversity:

'Have you not heard what its edges did

at Kazimah the morning I met Amr?

And my heart is like yours; I do not fear

fierce combat, nor do I fear panic.

And you seek food for the cubs,

while I seek a bridal dower for my paternal uncle's daughter.

Why, then, do you want one like me to flee

and leave his life in your hands against his will?

I have counseled you; so seek someone other than me, O lion,

for food; my flesh is bitter indeed.'

But when he took my counsel for deceit

and defied me, as though I had uttered foul talk,

he advanced, and I advanced—two lions who sought

a goal that proved rugged when they pursued it.

He drew back one forepaw for a stealthy attack

and stretched the other out to spring upon me.

I brandished the keen sword at him, and imagined I

had cleft a dawn with it amid the darkness.

And I bestowed on him a wild stroke, which he deemed

treachery to one deceived by what he had been promised.

With a cleaving sword-stroke I left him in two,

though he had been a single whole, like a boulder.

So he fell, smeared with blood, as though I

had toppled a towering edifice with that blow.

And I said to him, 'It pains me that I

have killed my equal in endurance and might.

But you sought something that none had sought

but you; I could not, O lion, bear it patiently.

You try to teach me flight!

By my father's life, you have attempted an outrage.

So be not far away; you have met a free man,

who dreads reproach; so die free.'
