Whose ruined campsite at al-ʿAmq now lies effaced?
It has taken instead white gazelles and wide-eyed wild cattle sheltering in thickets.
تَبَدَّلَhas taken instead أُدمانَpale-colored ones الظِباءِof the gazelles وحَيرَماًand wild cattle

It has taken instead pale gazelles and wild cattle.
So today I linger amid her ruined dwellings.
أَعَبَّاسُO ʿAbbās لوif كانتwere شِياراًwell-fed جيادُناour steeds
بِتَثليثَat Tathlīth ماnot ناصَيتَyou challenged بعديafter me الأحامساthe fierce warriors
O ʿAbbās, had our steeds been well-fed
At Tathlīth, you would not have challenged the fierce warriors after me.
لَدُسناكُمُwe would surely have trampled you بالخيلwith horses منfrom كلّevery جانبٍside
كماjust as داسَcrushed طَبّاخُthe cook القُدُورِof the cauldrons الكَرادِساthe great joint-bones
We would surely have trampled you with horses from every side,
As the cauldron-cook crushes the great joint-bones.
بِمُعتَرَكٍon a battlefield شَطَّat the bank of الحُبَيَّاal-Ḥubayyā ترىyou see بهin it
منamong القومthe men مَحدُوساًstruck down وآخرَand another حادِساstriking
On a battlefield at al-Ḥubayyā’s bank, you see there
One of the men struck down, and another striking.
تَسَاقَتexchanged deadly draughts بهin it الأبطالُthe champions حتّىuntil كأَنَّهاas though they were

There the champions exchanged death’s draughts, until they seemed
Bows worn thin by travel, disheveled and wretched.
فإِنّfor indeed ظُهورَthe backs الخيلِof horses ثَمَّthere حُصونُناour fortresses
ترىyou see لبنيamong the sons of عُصمٍʿUṣm بهنَّfor them تَنَافُساrivalry
For the horses’ backs are our fortresses there;
You see the sons of ʿUṣm vying for them.
ولكنّهاbut they قِيدَتwere led بِصَعدَةَat Ṣaʿdah مرَّةًonce
فَأَصبحنَso they became ماnot يمشينَthey walk إِلَّاexcept تَكَاوُساhobbling
But once they were led at Ṣaʿdah,
And they came to walk only with a hobbling gait.
فَيوماًso one day تراناyou see us فيin الخُزُورِsilken robes (uncertain reading) نَجرُّهاwe trail them

So one day you see us in silken robes, trailing them,
And one day you see us in iron armor, grim-faced.
ويوماًand one day تراناyou see us فيover الثَريدbroth-soaked bread نَبُسُّهُwe mix it
ويوماًand one day تراناyou see us نَكسِرُwe break الكَعكَthe bread-cakes يابساdry
And one day you see us over broth-soaked bread, mixing it,
And one day you see us breaking dry bread-cakes.
عَمَرتُI filled مَجالَthe arena الخيلof horses بالبِيضwith bright swords والقَناand spears
كماjust as عَمَرَتfilled شُمطُthe gray-haired men اليهودِof the Jews الكنائساthe synagogues
I filled the horses’ arena with bright swords and spears,
As gray-haired Jews filled the synagogues.
ونسمعُand we hear للهنديّof the Indian sword فيagainst البَيضِthe helmets رَنَّةًa ringing
كَرَنَّةِlike the cry of أَبكارٍvirgins زُفِفنَwere escorted in procession عَرائساas brides
And we hear the Indian blade ring against the helmets,
Like the cries of maidens escorted as brides.
بِهِنَّwith them قَتَلناwe killed منfrom نزارٍNizār حُماتَهاits defenders
فماso not إِنemphasis on negation ترىyou see إلَّاexcept ذليلاًan abased man وتاعِساand a wretched one
With them we killed the defenders of Nizār,
So you see none but the abased and wretched.
أَعبّاسُO ʿAbbās إنif تطمعyou covet فماthen no ثَمَّthere مَطمَعٌprospect of gain
فَرُحso depart قانعاًresigned ممّاfrom what طَلَبتَyou sought وآيِساand despairing
O ʿAbbās, if you covet gain, there is nothing there to covet.
So depart, resigned and despairing of what you sought.
