أَرِقتُI was sleepless وأَمسَيتُand I reached evening لاnot أَرقُدُI sleep
وساوَرَنيand assailed me المُوجِعُthe tormenting الأَسودُthe dark
I lay sleepless; evening came, and I could not sleep.
I stayed up and spent the night sleepless
And dark, tormenting sorrow assailed me.
As the dark excruciating pain beset me
وَبِتُّand I spent the night لذكرىin remembrance of بنيthe sons of مازنٍMazin
كَأنّيَas though I were مُرتَفِقٌpropped on an elbow أَرمَدُsore-eyed
And I spent the night remembering Banu Mazin,
I stay up reminiscing the Banu Mazin
As though I were a sore-eyed man propped on his elbow.
As if I were a sleepless bleary-eyed person
أَأغزوshall I raid? رجالَthe men of بنيthe sons of مازنٍMazin
ببطنِin the valley of تَبَالَةَTabalah أَمor أَرقُدُI sleep
Shall I raid the men of Banu Mazin
Shall I raid the men of Banu Mazin
In the valley of Tabalah, or shall I sleep?
In the belly of Dhubabah or shall I sleep
وأَعددتُand I prepared للحربِfor war فَضفاضةًa loose-fitting coat of mail
كأنَّas though مَطاوِيَهاits folds مِبرَدُa file
And I prepared for war a loose-fitting coat of mail,
And I prepared for war white horses
As though its folds were a file.
As if their resting places were made of ice
