تشبهت بالأعراب أَهل التعجرف

فدل على فحواك قُبح التكلف

You have imitated the arrogant Bedouins

So the ugliness of affectation betrayed your true nature.

لسان نباطي البيان صرفته

A tongue Nabataean in speech—you turned it

Though your eloquent Nabataean tongue

Toward the Bedouins' language, but it would not adapt.

You've turned into the language of uncouth Bedouins

وشيخك شيخ صالح غير أنه

وشيخك شيخ صالح غير أنه

مليء بتحبير الرداء المفوف

مليء بتحبير الرداء المفوف

And your father is a worthy old man, except that he

Your teacher is a pious man but

Is adept at ornamenting the striped cloak.

Swathed in his wide cloak, stained with dye

ولا تنس ما قد كان بالأمس حاكه

ولا تنس ما قد كان بالأمس حاكه

أبوك وعود الخف لم يتقصف

أبوك وعود الخف لم يتقصف

And do not forget what was woven yesterday

And forget not what your father promised yesterday

By your father, while the loom's wooden beater had not splintered.

Vows not kept, like slit shoes, worn thin

لئن كنت للأشعار والنحو حافظاً

لقد كان من حفاظ سورة يوسف

He was indeed among those who had memorized Surah Yusuf.
