Did they begrudge what Shayban of Wa'il brought?
The ancients bemoaned what Wael's tribe have brought,
Knowing their thoroughbred, I am more protective of it and more eager for it.
with their eyes they taught me to yearn and desire.

علي وما في السوق والسوم مغضب
Is it because you heard of a non-Arabian horse for a thoroughbred that you stirred their anger
If I heard the reproach of their angry eyes,
against me? Nothing in the market or bargaining warrants anger.
it angers me, not the market or the price.

مكد وجياش الأجاري مسهب
And among horses—though all are classed as horses—
And the horses, though all horses are noble,
are a sluggish mount and a surging, wide-striding galloper.
the active and swift pacers stand out.

And the non-Arabian horse is not equal—your wits have gone astray—
The reproacher is not equal to you, though your cheeks are rosy,
to the fleet thoroughbred, the noble, proven steed.
Nor the sharp-eyed excellent tried steed.

So if Umm Khalid kindled a fire or was rescued,
So whether I ignite or save, O Khaalid's mother,
then even barren fire-strikers kindle more readily and blaze more brightly.
The flint is more insightful and pierces deeper.
