ترحل فما بغداد دار إقامة

وما عند من أضحى ببغداد طائل

Depart, for Baghdad is no place to settle.

And those now in Baghdad have nothing of worth.

محل ملوك سمنهم في أديمهم

وكلهم عن حلية المجد عاطل

An abode of kings whose fatness lies in their skins,

And all of them are bereft of glory's adornment.

فلا غرو إن شلت يد المجد والعُلى

وقد سماح من رجال ونائل

So it is no wonder if the hand of glory and eminence is paralyzed,

And indeed, generosity from men, and bounty.

إذا غضغض البحر الغطامط ماؤه

فليس عظيماً أن تغيض الجداول

When the waters of the mighty sea dwindle,

Then it is no great matter that the streams should dwindle.
