Abu Saʿd summoned me and offered advice
to me—and counsel can deceive—
لأجزرso I offer for slaughter لحميmy flesh كلبthe dog of نبهانNabhan كالذيlike him who
دعاsummoned القاسطيal-Qasiti حتفهhis doom وهوwhile he نازحfar away
to offer my flesh for slaughter to Nabhan's dog, like him who
summoned al-Qasiti—his own doom—while he was far away,
أوor البرجميal-Burjumi حينwhen أهداهoffered him up حينهhis doom

or al-Burjumi, when his doom offered him up
to a fire with two kindlers and a slaughterer beside it.
ورأيand the counsel أبيof Abu سعدSaʿd وإنand even if كانhe was حازماًprudent
بصيراًperceptive وإنand even if ضاقتgrew narrow عليهfor him المسارحthe pastures
And as for Abu Saʿd's counsel—though he was prudent,
perceptive, even if his pastures grew narrow—
أعارhe lent بهthrough it ملعونthe accursed one of نبهانNabhan سيفهhis sword
علىagainst قومهhis people والقولand speech عافsparing وجارحand wounding
through it he lent his sword to Nabhan's accursed one
against his own people; words may spare or wound.

علىagainst قومهhis people للمرءfor a man ذيpossessing الطعمsound judgment فاضحdisgraceful
And a young man's aiding his people's enemies in war
against his own people is shameful for a man of sound judgment.
