شهم حازم وابن حازم

شهم حازم وابن حازم

And he witnessed what had no master—[wording unclear]—then tended it with the skill

Witness unparalleled, untouched by corrupt politics

Of a gallant, prudent man, and the son of a prudent man.

The resolve of Shihm and Ibn Hazm

أقمت لها العصرين رباً ولم أكن

أقمت لها العصرين رباً ولم أكن

كمن ضن عن عمرانها بالدراهم

كمن ضن عن عمرانها بالدراهم

I served as its keeper day and night, and was not

I tended it for two lifetimes without self-interest

Like one who begrudged dirhams for its cultivation.

Unlike those who withheld funds greedily

فجاءت تغالي في النبات كأنها

فجاءت تغالي في النبات كأنها

على شط فيض من فيوض الأعاجم

على شط فيض من فيوض الأعاجم

So it grew luxuriantly, as though it stood

It grew exuberantly as if at the bank

On the bank of a great river among the rivers of the non-Arabs.

Of overflowing foreign springs

كأن نقيض الليف في سعفاتها

كأن نقيض الليف في سعفاتها

نقيض رحال المبيس فوق العياهم

نقيض رحال المبيس فوق العياهم

As though the creaking of the palm fiber in its fronds were

As if the soft fibers in its leaves

The creaking of the camel-driver’s saddles atop sturdy camels.

Contrast the rough bedouin tents

وما الاصل ما رويت مضروب عرقه

وما الاصل ما رويت مضروب عرقه

من الماء عن إصلاح فرع بنائم

من الماء عن إصلاح فرع بنائم

And the rootstock, so long as you drench the ground its root has reached,

Its roots were not nourished vainly

With water, never sleeps in nurturing a branch.

With water for the sake of sprouting branches
