بنى لكم العلاء بناء صدق
وتعمرand you keep flourishing ذاكthat ياO حكمHakam بنson of بشرBishr
وتعمر ذاك يا حكم بن بشر
Al-‘Ala built for you an edifice of true worth,
Alaa built a house of truth for you all
And you keep it flourishing, O Hakam ibn Bishr.
And you inhabit it, O Hakam bin Bashar
فماfor … not مدحيmy praise لكمof you لأصيبso that I may gain مالاwealth
فما مدحي لكم لأصيب مالا
ولكنbut مدحكمpraise of you زينan adornment لشعريto my poetry
ولكن مدحكم زين لشعري
For my praise of you is not meant to gain wealth,
My praise of you is not to gain wealth
But praising you is an adornment to my poetry.
But praising you adorns my poetry
