    Have you seen, across the earth’s length or breadth,

    a dwelling like Baghdad? She is the earth’s paradise.

    وعيش سواها غير صاف ولا غض

    Life in Baghdad has grown serene, and its bough has turned green;

    And life elsewhere is neither serene nor fresh.

    وبعض الأرض أمرؤ من بعض

    Lives grow longer in her, for her food is wholesome;

    And some lands are more wholesome than others.

    إنه ما شاء في خلقه يقضي

    Her Lord decreed that no caliph should die in her;

    Indeed, He decrees whatever He wills among His creatures.

    The stranger’s eye sleeps in her, and you will never see

    a stranger in the land of al-Sham hoping for sleep.

    So if Baghdad is repaid by them for her loan,

    then she has lent nothing but kindness.

    And if she is assailed by them with abandonment and loathing,

    Yet she has not come to deserve abandonment or hatred.
