Abu Saʿd summoned me and offered advice

    to me—and counsel can deceive—

to offer my flesh for slaughter to Nabhan's dog, like him who

summoned al-Qasiti—his own doom—while he was far away,

or al-Burjumi, when his doom offered him up

to a fire with two kindlers and a slaughterer beside it.

And as for Abu Saʿd's counsel—though he was prudent,

perceptive, even if his pastures grew narrow—

through it he lent his sword to Nabhan's accursed one

against his own people; words may spare or wound.

And a young man's aiding his people's enemies in war

against his own people is shameful for a man of sound judgment.
