Indeed, a sandy declivity, where stands the tent of a freeborn woman,

Indeed, a shelter from rain in the sands, in the tent of a freeborn woman,

noble and purebred, beside a ridge clothed in alāʾ trees and ʿarfaj shrubs,

of pure lineage, on a sandy ridge bearing alāʾ and ʿarfaj shrubs,

تخور به الغزلان كل عشية

تخور به الغزلان كل عشية

الى كل خشف كالسوار وتخرج

الى كل خشف كالسوار وتخرج

where every evening the gazelles call plaintively

where gazelles low every evening

to every bracelet-fair fawn, then venture forth,

to each fawn, like a bracelet, and emerge,

أحب إلينا من قراقير ساحل

بدجلة أو قصر ببغداد مرتج
