Why did you not ask, when the milch camels returned at evening,
Why didn't you ask, when the pollen blew gently,
bustling like ostrich chicks, their udder-ties still dry?
The she-camels brayed and did not cease their complaint,
إِنّاindeed we لَنَعجَلُwe surely hasten بِالعَبيطِwith fresh meat لِضَيفِناfor our guest
قَبلَbefore العِيالِthe household وَنَطلُبُand we seek الأَوتاراvengeance
We surely hasten fresh meat to our guest,
We hasten to serve plain food to our guest
before our household, and seek vengeance.
Before our families, and we seek the strings,
وَنَعُدُّand we recount أَيّاماًbattle-days لَناours وَمَآثِراًand glorious deeds
قِدَماًfrom of old نَبُذُّwe surpass البَدوَthe nomads وَالأَمصاراand the townsfolk
And we recount our battle-days and glorious deeds,
And we count days for us and deeds,
from of old, surpassing the nomads and the townsfolk.
Steps with which we scorn the deserts and cities,
مِنهاamong them خُوَيٌّKhuwayy وَالذَهابُand al-Dhahāb وَبِالصَفاand at al-Ṣafā

Among them are Khuwayy and al-Dhahāb, and at al-Ṣafā
Including a beloved, going and returning, and in clarity
a day whose glory became firmly established, then spread.
A day on which the glory of the one who marched triumphed
