ها بِثَهلانَ عَنوَةً فَاِستَقَرَّت
We led the steeds until we halted
We spurred our steeds until we overwhelmed them,
them at Thahlan by force, and they came to rest.
And by sheer force took control and settled in.

And I urged al-Maznuq on until he hurled me
I drove back those cornered until they threw me
amid massed horses, which then scattered.
Among raging horses that then scattered about.
وَصَبَحناand we assailed at dawn عَبساًAbs وَمُرَّةَand Murrah كَأساًa cup

في نَواحي دِيارِهِم فَاِسبَطَرَّت
And at dawn we served Abs and Murrah a cup
At dawn we were frowning, bitter was the cup
in the reaches of their lands, and it spread wide.
In regions of their homes that we overran.

And steeds of ours we school in
And steeds we have, we train them for the charge
bold advance, whenever a raid appears and bristles.
Whenever a raid appears and stirs alarm.

Cherished steeds, like thirst-crazed camels, with disheveled forelocks—
War mounts like hyenas, disheveled manes,
we quickened their gallop, and they sped on.
We carried off from their settlements in haste.

With young warriors of Amir, who strike
With youths from Omar striking the white
helmets when the horses shudder in the narrow pass.
When horses in the strait shuddered in fear.

حينَ هَرَّت كُماتُها وَاِستَحَرَّت
In a narrow pass where spearpoints fly,
In a strait where stallions take flight,
when their armored champions snarl and battle burns hot.
When their lead mares fled in panic and alarm.

They strike the lead mare in the frenzy of battle
dust, when their war breaks out and grows fierce.
When their war flares up with snarls and growls.

And it raised a dust-cloud after dust
Raising clamor after rest,
and a quivering neigh; then it grew dark and grim.
With snorting of an eager steed in alarm.

With steeds that went forth at dawn with a mighty host
With steeds that attacked in a mighty troop
and struck their enemies, inflicting harm.
And inflicted losses, causing injury.
