لَقَدindeed تَعلَمُknows الحَربُwar أَنّيthat I اِبنُهاher son
وَأَنّيand that I الهُمامُthe valiant champion بِهاin it المُعلِمُbearing a distinguishing battle-mark
War knows full well that I am her son,
War has learned that I am its son
And that I am her valiant champion, bearing my battle-mark;
And that I am the one who teaches it valor
وَأَنّيand that I أَحُلُّI dwell عَلىupon رَهوَةٍa height
مِنَof المَجدِglory فيin الشَرَفِhonor الأَعظَمِthe greatest
And that I dwell upon a height
And that I attain glorious heights
Of glory, in the loftiest honor;
Of supreme glory and honor
وَأَنّيand that I أُشَمِّصُI put to flight بِالدارِعيthe mailed warriors (word continues)
نَ(completes the preceding plural) فيamid ثَورَةِthe upsurge of الرَهَجِbattle-dust الأَقتَمِdark
And that I put the mailed warriors to flight
And that I don my coat of mail
Amid the swirling surge of dark battle-dust;
When fury and rage intensify
وَأَنّيand that I أَكُرُّI charge إِذاwhen أَحجَمواthey hang back
بِأَكرَمَwith a nobler charge مِنthan عَطفَةِthe spring of الضَيغَمِthe lion
And that I charge when they hang back,
And that I attack when they hesitate
With a charge nobler than a lion’s spring;
With a blow more gracious than the bending of a laden branch
وَأَضرِبُand I strike بِالسَيفِwith the sword يَومَon the day of الوَغىbattle
أَقُدُّI cleave بِهِwith it حَلَقَthe rings of المُبرَمِtightly wrought mail
And I strike with the sword on the day of battle,
And I strike with the sword on the day of battle
Cleaving with it the rings of tightly wrought mail.
Leading the necks of foes to the slaughter
فَهَذاso this عَتاديmy armament لَوَif only أَنَّthat الفَتىthe young man
يُعَمَّرُis granted long life فيin غَيرِother than ما(emphatic particle) مَهرَمِdecrepitude
Such is my armament—if only a young man
Such is my equipment if only the valiant man
Could live long without decrepitude.
Could live beyond destruction and ruin
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَhas learned الحَيُّthe clan مِنof عامِرٍʿĀmir
بِأَنَّthat لَناto us ذِروَةَthe summit of الأَجسَمِthe greatest eminence
And the clan of ʿĀmir has learned
And the living one from 'Amir has learned
That ours is the summit of the greatest eminence;
That we possess the highest and mightiest of statures
وَأَنّاand that we المَصاليتُthe resolute warriors يَومَon the day of الوَغىbattle
إِذاwhen ما(emphatic particle) العَواويرُthe cowards لَمdo not تُقدِمِadvance
And that we are the resolute warriors on the day of battle,
And that we are the first chargers on the day of battle
When the cowards do not advance.
When the horsemen do not advance
