إِنّيindeed I إِذاwhen اِنتَتَرَتsnapped loose أَصِرَّةُbindings أُمَّكُمyour mother
مِمَّنamong those who يُقالُare told لَهُto him تَسَربَلdon a tunic فَاِركَبِthen mount
Indeed, when your mother's bindings snap loose, I
When your mothers' ropes are untied
am among those told, "Don your tunic, then mount."
By one called to ride his stallion, mount!
لاno ضَيرَharm قَدalready حَكَّتshe rubbed بِمُرَّةَagainst Murrah بَركَهاher breast
وَتَرَكنَand they left أَشجَعَAshjaʿ مِثلَlike خُشبِwood الأَثأَبِthe wild fig tree
No harm: she has ground her breast against Murrah,
No harm. She has bitten with her bridle
And they left Ashjaʿ like wild-fig timber.
And left the bravest like dry kindling wood
لاnot يَخطُبونَthey seek in marriage إِلىfrom الكِرامِthe noble men بَناتِهِمtheir daughters
وَتَشيبُand grows gray أَيُّمُهُمtheir unmarried woman وَلَمّاand not yet تُخطَبِis sought in marriage
They do not seek the noble men's daughters in marriage,
They do not ask for the daughters of the generous
And their unmarried women grow gray, still unwooed.
And their mothers grow old before being asked for
أَفَرِحتَdid you rejoice? أَنthat غَدَرَacted treacherously الزَمانُTime بِفارِسٍagainst a horseman
قُلحَyellow-toothed ones الكِلابِthe dogs وَكُنتُand I was غَيرَnot مُغَلَّبِdefeated
Did you rejoice that Time betrayed a horseman,
Did you rejoice that time betrayed a horseman
you yellow-toothed dogs, though I was unbeaten?
Mangy dogs while I was not defeated
ياO مُرَّMurrah قَدalready كَلِبَhas grown rabid الزَمانُTime عَلَيكُمُagainst you
وَنَكَأتُand I reopened قَرحَتَكُمyour wound وَلَمّاand not yet أُنكَبِI am stricken
O Murrah, Time has grown rabid against you,
O Murr, time has attacked you
And I have reopened your wound, yet have not been stricken.
And torn your wounds when you fell
وَتَرَكتُand I left جَمعَهُمُtheir host بِلابَةِon the lava plain of ضَرغَدٍDarghad
جَزَرَslaughtered prey السِباعِbeasts of prey وَكُلِّand every نَسرٍvulture أَهدَبِlong-feathered
And I left their host on the lava plain of Darghad,
And left their group to the stupidity of vain one
As meat for beasts of prey and every long-feathered vulture.
Prey for beasts and every vulture pecking
وَلَقَدand indeed أَبَلتُI pastured الخَيلَthe horses فيin عَرَصاتِكُمyour courtyards
وَسطَamid الدِيارِthe dwellings بِكُلِّwith every خِرقٍgallant man مِحرَبِwarlike
And indeed, I pastured the horses in your courtyards,
And I made the horses trample your lands
Amid the dwellings, with every gallant, warlike man.
In the midst of homes with every torn robe
وَشَفَيتُand I healed نَفسيmy soul مِنfrom فَزارَةَFazarah إِنَّهُمindeed they
أَهلُmen of الفَعالِnoble deeds وَأَهلُand men of عِزٍّmight أَغلَبِoverpowering
And I have healed my soul with vengeance on Fazarah; indeed, they
And quenched my soul’s thirst for they
are men of noble deeds and men of overpowering might.
Are people of action and victorious people
وَلَقَدand indeed فَخَرتَyou boasted بِباطِلٍof falsehood عَدَّدتَهُyou enumerated it
فَإِذاso when أَتَيتَyou reach بُيوتَthe homes of قَومِكَyour people فَاِحسُبِthen count
And indeed, you boasted of falsehood that you recounted;
You have falsely boasted of what you enumerated
So when you reach your people's homes, then count.
So when you come to the homes of your people, take account
فَلَتُخبِرَنَّكَfor she will surely tell you فاقِدٌa bereaved woman عَنof شَجوِهاher grief
حَذِلٌsore from weeping مَدامِعُهاher tear-ducts بِدَمعٍwith tears سَيكَبِstreaming
For a bereaved woman will surely tell you of her grief,
For you will be told by one who misses her
Her tear-ducts sore with streaming tears.
Whose tears flow with tears she will pour
وَلَقَدand indeed لَحِقتَyou caught up بِخَيلِناwith our cavalry فَكَرِهتَهاthen you loathed it
وَصَدَدتَand you turned away عَنfrom خَيشومِهاits snout المُستَكلِبِfiercely raging
And indeed, you caught up with our cavalry, then loathed it,
And you have reached our horses and disliked them
And turned away from its fiercely raging snout.
And diverted their spears from the gaping maw
فَبَنيso the sons of فَزارَةَFazarah قَدindeed عَلَونَthey overpowered بِكَلكَلٍwith a breast
وَالحَيَّand the tribe أَشجَعَAshjaʿ قَدindeed رَمَينَthey struck بِمَنكِبِwith a shoulder
So they overpowered the sons of Fazarah with their breasts,
The sons of Fazarah ascended the hill
And struck the tribe Ashjaʿ with their shoulders.
And the living are most courageous, having shot with a bow
غادَرنَthey left مِنهُمof them تِسعَةًnine فيin مَعرَكٍa battlefield
وَثَلاثَةٌand three قَرَّنَّهُمthey bound them together فيat المِشعَبِal-Mishʿab
They left nine of them on a battlefield,
They left nine of them in the battlefield
And three—they bound them together at al-Mishʿab.
And three were paired off in the mountain pass
