لَهُنَّ لَدى مَزاحِفِهِ عَويلُ
I left the women of Sāʿidah ibn Murr
I left the women of Sa'ida, son of Murr
wailing at his battlefields.
Their cries of grief at his place of slaughter.
جَمَعتُI brought together لَهُagainst him يَدَيَّmy two hands بِذيwith one having كُعوبٍshaft joints

يُقَدِّمُ نَصلَهُ أَظمى طَويلُ
Against him I gripped a jointed spear with both hands,
I gathered both my hands on the hilt
long, slender and dusky, driving its blade ahead.
Of the sword that delivers the fullest blow.
شَكَكتُI pierced بِهِwith it مَجامِعَthe junctions of رُحبَيَيهِhis two broad ribs

فَصارَ رِداؤُهُ مِنهُ طَميلُ
I pierced with it the junctions of his two broad ribs,
I shook the joints of his ample frame;
and his cloak became bloodstained from it.
His coat of mail was rent and pierced.
