وَغارَةٌ تَستَثيرُ النَقعَ في رَهَجِ
For the prized steeds, a dawn departure when we set them galloping,
The horses are led out at dawn when we prepare them,
And a raid that raises the dust in a swirling cloud.
And a raid that stirs up the resting camels.

So al-Maznuq never leaves me, bearing
So the worn-out camel will not leave me behind,
A saddle-pad that conditioning has secured upon his back.
A mount whose strap is tightened by the racecourse.

أَبناءُ عامِرَ تُزجي كُلَّ مُختَرَجِ
When war's heralds proclaim it, there appear before them
When war is announced, the sons of Aamir appear to them
The sons of ʿAmir, driving every trained steed forward.
Driving forward every trained warrior.

يُقَحِّمونَ كَأَنَّ القَومَ في رَهَجِ
They wear helmets and ample coats of mail,
Upon them are white garments and sturdy bodies,
Plunging headlong, as though the men were in a cloud of dust.
As if the people are in turmoil.

وَهُنَّ عالَينَ بِاِبنِ الجَونِ في دَرَجِ
Time and again they raided ʿAbs at dawn, on the morning of terror,
They became frowning in the morning after being startled,
And they bore Ibn al-Jawn upward along a stepped path.
While they are high due to Ibn al-Jawn in the valley.

And the horses swooped down from Wadi al-Dhinab, having already
And the horses leapt from the valley of Dhinab
Tilted their spearheads, red with blood from jugular veins.
Their tongues panting red from exertion.

If you ask the horses about us at their battle stations,
If you ask the horses about us in their battle positions
On the day of al-Mushaqqar, with the champions in turmoil,
On the day of clashing, when heroes are in turmoil,

They will tell you that I renew the charge among them,
They will tell you that I return the attack among them
When the lances are shattered on a day of fierce combat.
When the spears are broken on an intense day.
