and the days of Hisma, or a massing host's fierce battles,
وَبِالكَورِand at al-Kawr إِذwhen ثابَتrallied حَلائِبُthe allied bands of جَعفَرٍJa'far

and at al-Kawr, when Ja'far's allied bands rallied
to you, and Khath'am came to join forces,
لِيَنتَزِعواto wrest away عِلقاتَناour treasured possessions ثُمَّthen يَرتَعواgraze freely
فَأَردَتso felled قَناتيmy spear مِنهُمُamong them كُلَّevery ماجِدِnoble warrior
to wrest away our treasures, then graze at will.
So my spear felled every noble warrior among them.
فَأَنفَذتُso I ran through عَبدَAbd (servant of) اللَهِAllah (God) ثُمَّthen بِضَربَةٍwith a blow

I ran Abd Allah through; then, with a blow—
from which every protector and defender had shrunk—

I left him slain in the open, struck to the ground—
Dubay'ah—when Shutayr ibn Khalid was saved

by a fleet horse; and Zayd al-Khayl had received a spear-thrust,
when the man Zayd was straying, not following the right course.
فَذَلِكَso that ماwhat أَعدَدتُI have laid in store فيon كُلِّevery مَأقِطٍbattlefield

Such is what I have laid in store on every battlefield,
however grim, and in every year that burdens the clan.
