ياO لَهَفيmy anguish عَلىover ماthat ضَلَّwas wasted سَعيِيmy striving
وَسَيريand my journeying فيin الهَواجِرِthe midday heats ماnot أَقيلُI rest at noon

Alas for my striving gone to waste,
and my journeying through the midday heat without a noonday rest!
فَإِنَّfor indeed الحَيَّthe tribe خَثعَمَKhath‘am أَحرَزَتهُمprotected them
رِماحُهُمtheir spears وَتُنذِرُهُمand warns them سَلولُSalul
For the people of Khath‘am have been protected
by their spears, and Salul warns them
بِمَخرَجِناof our departure فَلاso not نَخفىwe are hidden عَلَيهِمfrom them
وَيَأتيهِمand comes to them بِعَورَتِناwith our weak spot الدَليلُthe guide
of our departure, so we are not hidden from them,
and the guide brings them word of our weak spot.
وَلَوand if أَنّيthat I أُطِعتُI had been obeyed لَكانَthere would have been مِنّيfrom me
لِمُدرِكِfor Mudrik أَكلُبٍof Aklub يَومٌa day طَويلُlong
And had I been obeyed, I would have brought
a long day upon Mudrik of Aklub.
وَلَكِنّيbut I عُصيتُI was disobeyed وَكانَand it was جَهلاًfolly
بِهِمon their part أَلّاnot to يُبالواthey pay heed ماwhat أَقولُI say
But I was disobeyed, and it was folly
on their part to pay no heed to what I say.
يَلومُنيَreproach me الَّذينَthose who تَرَكتُI left خَلفيbehind me
وَيَعصينيand disobey me الَّذينَthose who بِهِمwith them أَصولُI charge
Those I left behind reproach me,
and those with whom I charge disobey me.
