The Tubbaʿ kings had predecessors in ages past,

as did Ibn al-Murār and kings over Syria,

until kingship passed from Lakhm to a king

whose spearhead was bared against one no archer had shot at.

He bore down upon us with claws and collared us

with a dove’s neck-ring, bringing misery and humiliation.

If God grants us a chance through a turn of fortune that grieves you,

we shall leave you alone, calling on Bisṭām’s clan.

So look to the proud chiefs: they have not protected you from Muḍar.

Is there a protector in Rabīʿa, if you do not call on us?
