قَضىhas decreed اللَهُGod فيin بَعضِsome of المَكارِهِthe hardships لِلفَتىfor the young man
قَضى اللَهُ في بَعضِ المَكارِهِ لِلفَتى
بِرُشدٍwith right guidance وَفيand in بَعضِsome of الهَوىdesire ماwhat يُحاذِرُhe fears
بِرُشدٍ وَفي بَعضِ الهَوى ما يُحاذِرُ
God has decreed that in some things he loathes, a young man
God has decreed for a young man, amid some hardships,
finds his right guidance; and in some desires lies what he should beware of.

أَلَمdo ... not? تَعلَميyou know (feminine) أَنّيthat I إِذاwhen الإِلفُthe close companion قادَنيleads me
أَلَم تَعلَمي أَنّي إِذا الإِلفُ قادَني
إِلىtoward الجَورِinjustice لاnot أَنقادُI yield وَالإِلفُwhile the companion جائِرُis unjust
إِلى الجَورِ لا أَنقادُ وَالإِلفُ جائِرُ
Did you not know that, if God were to lead me
Do you not know that when a close companion leads me
into injustice, I would not follow—even were God unjust?
toward injustice, I do not yield, though the companion is unjust?
