غَداةَ جَزَينا الجَونَ بِالجَونِ صَيلَما
We arrived, then lodged with the nobles of Darim,
the morning we repaid al-Jawn with al-Jawn—a crushing blow.

بِغَيرِ القَنا في خَشيَةٍ أَو تَجَرُّما
No people fought in our stead, nor did we seek refuge
in anything but spears, whether from fear or guilt.

And I have seen no people who raise their banner
toward our summit of glory, among those who speak

لَنا في جَسيمِ الأَمرِ أَن نَتَكَرَّما
among mankind, without acknowledging, over themselves,
our right to noble preeminence in weighty affairs.

And we are those who led the fine steeds on sore hooves,
as the bowmaker heat-seasons nabʿ and saʾsam wood.

وَنَحنُ تَرَكنا حَيَّ مُرَّةَ مَأتَما
And we struck Asma's clan at dawn with spears,
and we left Murra's clan in mourning.

We slit open the pregnant women of Shanu'a, after
our steeds had trampled Nahd and Khath'am at Fayf al-Rih—

a troop of led horses, worn lean by raiding, after
its easy-gaited steeds had rivaled straightened spear-shafts.

And we descended at dawn upon Najran's people in a raid
that made its pregnant women urinate blood for fear of us.
