The tale-bearers claimed that Duma had disappointed

My hopes, and her promised kindness had dwindled.

They spoke truly; the signs of her conduct made it plain to me,

And a ragged-winged bird, coming from behind, bore the omen:

With close-set jaws, a loud cawer at midmorning,

Boisterous, as though his wing were bound.

So I rebuked him: may his eggs never hatch,

And may a well-aimed arrow with rust-stained bindings strike him.

Are you glad that a wound has befallen a horseman?

Of those you have ruled, none remains but a subject.

And his neck, when you view him broadside, is like

A palm trunk, its fibre fallen away, stripped bare.
