عَلَيناagainst us فَهَلso is there إِنif كانَone is ذاpossessed of مِرَّةٍresolve ضَرَرharm
By my life, Ziyād has indeed offered a remark
against us—but if a man has resolve, is there any harm?
تُعَيِّرُناyou taunt us يَومَthe day of المَرَوراةِal-Marawrāh سادِراًheedlessly
وَعِندَكَand with you مِنfrom أَيّامِناour battle-days قَبلَهاbefore it غِيَرreversals of fortune
You taunt us heedlessly with the day of al-Marawrāh,
though you have suffered reversals in our battle-days before it.
فَمَنso who مُبلِغٌwill convey ذُبيانَDhubyān عَنّيfrom me رِسالَةًa message
مُغَلغَلَةًcarried far and wide مِنّيfrom me وَماand not تَنفَعُavail العِذَرexcuses
Who, then, will carry a message from me to Dhubyān,
borne far and wide from me? Excuses avail nothing.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتhave known عُلياthe upper clans of هَوازِنَHawāzin أَنَّناthat we
بَنوsons of الحَربِwar لاnot نَعياwe falter بِوِردٍin going to water وَلاnor صَدَرreturning from water
And indeed the upper clans of Hawāzin know that we
are sons of war, unfaltering in going to water or returning.
نَشُدُّwe tighten عِصابَthe binding-cord of الحَربِwar حَتّىuntil نُدِرُّهاwe make her yield milk

We tighten war's binding-cord until we make her yield milk,
when men's souls rise to the hollows of their throats.
تَرىyou see رائِداتِroving الخَيلِthe horses حَولَaround بُيوتِناour dwellings
أَبابيلَin bands تَرديgalloping بِالعَشِيِّin the evening وَبِالبُكُرand in the early mornings
You see the roving horses around our dwellings,
in bands, galloping in the evening and early morning.
