أَحَمُّ الشَوى وَالمُقلَتَينِ سَبوحُ
And a fleet runner bears my arms, as though he were
He bears a cloak of fine wool as though he were
A dark-limbed, dark-eyed, swift-striding beast,
The darkest chili pepper, potent and hot.

إِذا ما مَشى خَلفَ الظِباءِ نَطيحُ
Solitary in the upland wilderness, as though he were
A buck in the desert of Al-Yafā’ like a ram
A butting bull when he walks behind the gazelles.
Who charges, behind the does, and collides.

Then hunters of the land spied him and unleashed
A hunter spied him in that land, so they loosed
Trained hounds; he was wary of every pursuer.
A pack of hounds, urging them on with cries.

When he feared they would catch him, he was hurled
When he feared their gaining on him, he plunged with
Away from terror by slender, wide-set legs.
Terror into a gallop on trembling legs.
