She did indeed, and swore she would never return.
Indeed she did, and swore she would not return.

and the armies had not told you the news
and the troops had not told you the news

of what the chiefs of Banū Lujaym encountered—
of what befell the chiefs of Banu Lujaym,
fetters biting their chiefs in our hands.
as fetters bit their chiefs in our midst.

and every high-spirited mare, light in the belly,
and every swift mare, lean in the belly,
solidly knit—the far-off came to meet her.
compactly built, with a far-reaching stride.

like sheep pursued by a wolf.
like sheep assailed by a wolf.

We met them with keen, gleaming blades,
We met them with bright, finely sharpened swords,
slaying them with those until they were annihilated.
slaying them with these until they were wiped out.

We took their women riding behind us and came away,
And we took their women up behind us and returned,
their cheeks bloodied from scratching.
with their cheeks already bloodied by scratching.
