وعودُكِ أشهى منطقاً لو تكلَّما
Will this letter speak for me of my affection?
Does this book remind me of my love for you?
And your lute would be sweeter in speech, if it spoke.
Your promises are sweeter words, if only they could speak.

وقال سوى ما كان مني تعلّما
Ask it: has it sung you anything but my feelings,
Ask it, did anyone else sing to you but my passion?
And said anything but what it had learned from me?
And say anything but what I have learned from me?

Ah, eloquent lute, sing for me
Oh eloquent lute, sing to me
Of youth—for youth enchants the love-stricken heart.
A youthful song, for youth makes the longing heart happy.

فما أسعدَ الدنيا لمن نال مغنما
Youth yearned, and life is full of prizes;
Youth wished and life brings gains,
So how happy the world is for one who has won a prize!
How joyful is life for those who gain!

Widad, I envied the lute when you embraced it;
My love, I envied the lute when you pressed
Ah, for my lot with you—do I have as much?
Your lips to it. Do I have a moment with you like that?
