متى أنتَ يا وطني مُسعِدي
لقدindeed أفلتَتْhas slipped away همَّتيmy resolve منfrom يديmy hand
لقد أفلتَتْ همَّتي من يدي
When, my homeland, will you bring me joy?
When will you make me happy, my homeland?
Indeed, my resolve has slipped from my hand.
My ambitions have slipped from my hands.
هَجرْتُكَI forsook you لاnot الشوقُlonging يِدنيdraws me near إليكَtoward you

ولاnor الصبرُpatience إنif أدْعُهُI call upon it يُنجِدِcomes to my aid
ولا الصبرُ إن أدْعُهُ يُنجِدِ
I have forsaken you: longing does not draw me toward you,
I left you, though yearning does not bring me close to you,
nor does patience, if I call upon it, come to my aid.
Nor does patience, if I call upon it, help me.

And within you I battled the nights; whoever
I battled the nights for you, and whoever
struggles against his nights grows weary.
Battles his nights is exhausted.

As for youth, it has wearied of hopes,
As for youth, it is filled with wishes,
and as for time, it has brought me no joy.
And as for time, it did not make me happy.

Your country—protect the sanctuary of its glory,
Protect the sanctity of your glory,
for if you do not protect it, you will not be praised.
For if you do not protect it, you will not be praised.

Do not make light of its honor, for loyalty

Is evidence of the nobility of one who contends.

May I be bereft of honor on the day there is need
I lacked manliness the day ransom was wanted
for sacrifice for my country, and I do not sacrifice myself.
For my country, and I cannot ransom myself.

If a man dies as a sacrifice for a homeland,
When a man dies ransoming his homeland,
then he has indeed died a martyr's death.
He has died a martyr's death.

Barren are the lofty heights, desolate,
abounding in wastelands and uplands:
With much loss and distress.

when birds turn aside there to rest,
When the birds flock there to rest,
they cast themselves, exhausted, upon the hard rock.
Their cries echo over the frozen mountain tops.

Gloomy are the landmarks, their darkness not dispelled
by dawn is the darkness of its black night.
By a morning whose night was jet black.

It is empty of its sons, for its sons are nothing
Empty of its people, it is no longer their homeland,
but wanderers, forever scattered.
Just a place forever abandoned.

Separation makes us hate being neighbors
on a foaming sea of deep waters.

Ships bearing the like of what lies within our ribs:
Neighborhood like that in our breasts,
so it is no wonder if they do not cool.
Which will not cool unless separated.

When they approach the land of Lebanon, there stirs
When we neared the land of Lebanon,
within us the anguish of the distraught exile.
The yearning of the exiled overwhelmed us.

We did not notice the separation, but we cried
over a desolate, bare mountain.
Over a desolate, barren mountain.

Time has indeed worn away some of its twofold freshness,
Time has clothed itself in its old worn out garb,
so it now wears the garment of decay.

Pangs in the heart that have not subsided?
burning pangs in the breast that have not died down.

But which of the two causes more pain?
and whichever you add pain to suffers still more.

Of my God - pray and bow to it.
of my God; pray to Him and prostrate yourself.
