Sorrow and I are companions, both of us

True in affection, faithful to pledges.

Never have we parted for a while without

    Time bringing us together anew.

We keep vigil through the night, both silent, lest

The night reveal our secret to an envious one.

My companion said to me, having glimpsed the dawn

Peering out, gazing toward us from afar:

“Hide me by day from people's eyes,

For I am the intimate companion of black nights.”

    فاثو منها إِلى مِراسٍ شديدِ

    Woe to you, sorrow! I have opened my soul to you;

So dwell there, to face its fierce resistance.

A youth's provision for greatness includes no

Disposition that lacks steadfastness amid calamities.

The dream would suffice me, were you to complain to it

Of the wretchedness of fortune, hopes, and efforts.
