O neighbor of the mighty sea, a question:
O mighty ocean's neighbor, I ask
Have you surpassed your neighbor, or has he surpassed you in grandeur?
Have you wronged your neighbor or has he wronged you?

If only your space were not too confining

Let us compete in pottery and judge
to time, since glory is won by turns.
Time, if pottery can be proof

The honor of one who rests upon his glories is not
Glory is not for one who remains prideful of his glories
like the honor of one who advances with them unceasingly.
Like the glory of one who is freely glorified through them

I found nothing but what they called illusion.
I found only what my imagination conjured

The sheath held the blade fast, so it did not flow;
The scabbard held back the polished sword, so it did not flash
and the sheath wore it down, so it melted and flowed.
But the scabbard wearied it, and it melted and streamed
