Let my verses of congratulation suffice as praise,

if my pen cannot do praise full justice.

And hinting at it in my greetings is enough,

for I am a youth who seeks no explicit declaration.

I have not risen to offer praise, for indeed

Yusuf's virtues are as plain as daylight.

Were I among the eloquent, I would make it clear,

but my reed pen is ever faltering.

O dwelling, fare well at dawn and pass the evening beaming,

and enjoy a happy morning, my praised lord.

This year has come to you in joy; so bid

a year pass in happiness and depart.

The two years are alike: one year has passed, and already

a year has come to you with joy and radiance.

If that one wronged you by its departure,

one has now come hoping to find you forgiving.

They said, “Time is hostile to humankind.”

They all lied: that is not true.

Were that so, it would not have kept its pledges,

and today Time would not have wished to depart.

    Did this age move as

it wished? Time would not have wished to depart,

nor would a year have passed and left a lord

who filled Time with radiance when it was weary.

O dawn of this year, may serenity greet you!

Give Yusuf a morning greeting with your cheer.

Have a happy morning, my lord, and rejoice,

and dwell for all time in palaces of bliss.

And remain safe—may I be your ransom, my refuge among humankind—

for on the path to your favor I would sacrifice my soul.

My lord, do not think I speak [reading “speaker” for “slayer”]

anything but the truth when I intend praise.

For I grew up in a school whose leaders

taught me to speak the truth.

I matured there in their ways; could I

adopt anything but what I find made available?

And though I stand offering congratulations on the feast, I do not

reveal anything but what has already been made plain.

And if I fall short, do not blame me; should I seek

to shut a door that already stands open?

If I am not worthy to do praise full justice,

an excuse is allowed by the code of the noble.

    The cock's comb dances proudly

in its own home; listen to it, and it will crow.

My lord, good morning on a feast that has come

at a year's beginning, granting leave for joy.

Were the clouds to rain a brimming torrent upon us,

we would deem it meager, so abundant is our joy.

Or, if the sun of radiance fulfilled its duties,

it would rise and never seek to depart.

Or, if the moon of heaven saw our gladness,

it would wish to shine for us in splendor and appear.

And do we hope for moons to appear to us,

while my lord has a face that remains radiant?

Have you not seen how the full moon, since he rivaled it, has

turned away before his gaze, its radiance ugly?

And did you not see, the morning his hand came forth,

how the clouds turned back, put to shame?

If the Flood came upon us, we would not fear, for in

our days a Noah rivals Noah.

My lord, these congratulations of mine have been imbued with

some praise, though they may not suffice as full praise.

Look closely at their foam, and you will clearly see

beneath it the milk of eloquent praise.

Glory to Him who entrusted you with His servants' affairs,

so that you are obeyed, even should you command the wind.

Were we not Christ's servants and companions,

you would be called a messiah after Christ.

So our prayer, our glorification—mark the date—follows:

And the Lord desires glorification through prayer.
