Could my heart be free of love for you?
My heart cannot be free of your love
And indeed I have known you as lover and beloved.
I know you're a lover and the beloved
تهواكَloves you كلُّevery فضيلةِvirtue وتحبُّهاand you love it

Every virtue loves you, and you love it;
Every virtue loves you and wants you
and for it your heart is always yearning.
And your heart is still longing

And I see your qualities captivating by their beauty
I see your traits outshining in their beauty
one who takes no path toward perfection.
Those who don't walk the path of perfection
وأرىand I see جمَالَكyour beauty بالطهارةِwith purity مُشرقاًradiant
أتلومُdo you blame? قلباًa heart بالجمالto beauty عَلوقاattached
And I see your beauty radiant with purity;
I see your beauty shining with purity
do you blame a heart enamored of beauty?
Can I blame a heart attracted to beauty?
أهواكَI love you ياO بدرَfull moon الفضائلِof virtues والتُّقىand piety

I love you, O full moon of virtues and piety;
I love you, O full moon of virtues and piety
so rise within my heart, dawning in your radiance.
So rise in my heart with your dawning

I love your lovely traits, and I am not
I love your beautiful traits and I am not
one enslaved to any love but love for you.
Among those who became devoted to other than your love

Do not roast my heart in passion for you; rather,
Do not make my heart yearn for your love
set my heart ablaze in love for you.
But burn my heart with your passion

You have moistened me with love—no, no, I cannot accept
You have soaked me with love until I do not accept
not seeing myself drowned in devotion to you.
Except to see myself drowning in your loyalty

You have intoxicated me with love for you, until I thought myself
You have intoxicated me with your love until you left me
drunk, though I had drunk no pure wine.
Drunk but I did not drink wine

And if I grow drunk and do not sober up, do not blame me;
And if I get drunk and do not wake up, then do not blame me
has any lovesick lover sobered up from love, that I should sober up?
Does a drunkard wake up from the wine and become sober?

And indeed I saw a sentence upon your brow,
And I saw on your forehead a sign
which the pen of piety had further adorned.
That the pen of piety has decorated

Then I read in it what amounted, in brief, to this:
So I read in it what it summarizes as
“This is guidance; whoever follows it is protected.”
This guidance - whoever follows it will be guided

How lovely is perfection in you! For it has appeared
O excellent, perfection has appeared in you
as an illusion in others, but real in you.
Beyond you fancifully and in you really

You resemble Yusuf in chastity; indeed,
You resembled Joseph in chastity but
the very resemblance has become reality.
The resemblance has become real

So may the joyous feast gladden you, for it has come
So enjoy the joyous feast, for it has come

O feast, you are not the feast, but our feast is
the one I have come to praise as is his due.
The one I came to fulfill his rights

It is not the feast, my lord, that delights us, for
What is the feast, O my Master, that gladdens us when
through you alone has joy become our brother.
Without you, joy has not been a friend to us?

Yet it is an instrument, like an arrow, for
But it is a tool like an arrow when
unless properly guided, it would not strike its target.
If it is not aimed, it will not strike a target

O feast day of the prelate Yusuf, endure for us
O day of the feast of the Master Joseph stay for us
as a feast whose serenity's fragrance lingers sweetly.
A feast whose fragrance remains fragrant

On your day we shoot arrows of fire toward the heights,
We shoot the arrows of fire in you to the highest
so they aim for Mars and Capella.
So Mars and Sirius become red

So you would think they had risen to tell of joy
Imagine them rising to tell the stars of our joy
to heaven's star, so it might become their companion.
So for them it will become a companion

And they return, seeking no dwelling there,
And they return not seeking residence there
and begin scattering pearls and carnelian.
So they come scattering pearls and rubies

Those are arrows whose bow is our joys,
Those are arrows whose bow is our joys
wont to pass clean through the heart of sorrows.
They are accustomed to piercing the core of sorrows

So rejoice in a feast whose full moon rises from you,
So enjoy a feast you are its full moon
and remain safe, beloved in happiness's gaze.
And submit to the glance of our joy aimed

From it is fragrance and to you it has become devoted

So I took them to you as a path

If only my heart were free of your love
