أناI والهمُّand sorrow صاحبانِtwo companions كلاناboth of us
صادقُtrue الوُدّaffection حافظٌkeeper للعهودِof pledges
Sorrow and I are companions, both of us
I and worries are companions, both of us
True in affection, faithful to pledges.
True in friendship, keeping promises
ماnever افترقناwe parted حيناًfor a while منof الدهرِtime حتىuntil
جمعbrought together الدهرُtime بينناbetween us منfrom جديدِnew
Never have we parted for a while without
We have never parted for a moment in time until
Time bringing us together anew.
Time has reunited us again
نسْهَرwe keep vigil الليلthe night صامتَينِboth silent لئلاّlest
يكشِفَreveal الليلُthe night سرّناour secret لحسودِto an envious person
We keep vigil through the night, both silent, lest
We stay up nights silent so that
The night reveal our secret to an envious one.
The night does not reveal our secret to the envious

مُطلاًّpeering out يرنوgazing لناtoward us منfrom بعيدِafar
My companion said to me, having glimpsed the dawn
My friend said to me when he noticed dawn
Peering out, gazing toward us from afar:
Stretching to us from afar
وَارِنيhide me فيin النهارِthe daytime عنfrom أَعيُنِeyes الناسِthe people
فإنيfor I am خِدنُintimate companion اللياليthe nights السُّودِblack
“Hide me by day from people's eyes,
Hide me from people's eyes in the day
For I am the intimate companion of black nights.”
For I am the companion of black nights
ويكَwoe to you ياO همُّsorrow قدalready أبحتُكI have opened to you نفسيmy soul
فاثوso dwell منهاfrom it إِلىtoward مِراسٍresistance شديدِfierce
Woe to you, sorrow! I have opened my soul to you;
And you, O worries, I have confessed myself to you
So dwell there, to face its fierce resistance.
So unburden yourself onto a firm shoulder
ليسis not منamong عُدَّةِprovision الفتىthe young man للمعاليfor greatness
خُلُقٌa disposition فيin الخطوبِcalamities غيرُnot جليدِsteadfast
A youth's provision for greatness includes no
Courage in ordeals is not of the qualities
Disposition that lacks steadfastness amid calamities.
Of the youth if not strong
حسبيَenough for me الحُلمُthe dream لوif شكوتَyou complained إليهto it
شقوةَwretchedness الحظّfortune والمنىand hopes والجهودِand efforts
The dream would suffice me, were you to complain to it
My dream suffices me if I complained to it
Of the wretchedness of fortune, hopes, and efforts.
Of the bitterness of fate, wishes, and efforts
