You freely branded necks with your favors,

Yet the necks of my poetry bear no brand.

And you left me forgotten until I stood to remind you

Of myself, standing there with a claim you must honor.

And you disregarded me until I counted it a boon

To enter with the vast throng and offer greetings.

As though I had not served you on occasions

When I spoke plainly while other men equivocated,

Nor frequented this door in days when

Men did not crowd me there or jostle me.

I lie about myself whenever I rise to give thanks,

While, within me, the tongue of circumstance voices no such gratitude.

They said, “Show dignity; do not abandon a habit

For which you are known: patience is more fitting and more prudent.”

And is any village known beyond Abadan,

As the saying goes—or anyone like Ibn Shawar known?
