من لي بأن ترد الحجاز وغيرها
أخبارnews طيبpleasantness موارديmy arrivals ومصادريand my departures
أخبار طيب مواردي ومصادري
Who will ensure for me that the Hijaz and other lands receive
Who will bring me news from the Hijaz and elsewhere
news of my pleasant arrivals and departures?
Of the fine arrivals and departures of my friends?
زارتvisited بيwith me الأيامthe days أكرمthe noblest ساحةcourtyard
زارت بي الأيام أكرم ساحة
فوقupon الثرىthe earth فغدوتand so I became أكرمthe most honored زائرvisitor
فوق الثرى فغدوت أكرم زائر
The days brought me to the noblest courtyard
The days have honored me with their visit
upon the earth, and I became the most honored visitor.
And over the earth I have become the most noble visitor.
ووفدتand I came as a guest ألتمسseeking الكرامةhonor والغنىand wealth
ووفدت ألتمس الكرامة والغنى
فرجعتso I returned منof كلeach بحظwith a share وfirst fragment of 'ample' افرremaining fragment of 'ample'
فرجعت من كل بحظ و افر
And I came seeking honor and wealth,
I came seeking bounty and wealth,
so I returned with an ample share of each.
But returned deprived of all hope and empty-handed.
فكأنso it was as though مكةMecca قالsaid صادقtrue فالهاher augury
فكأن مكة قال صادق فالها
سافرtravel تعدyou will return نحويtoward me بوجهwith a face سافرradiant; unveiled
سافر تعد نحوي بوجه سافر
It was as though Mecca's true augury had said:
It was as if Mecca had told me in truth:
"Travel; you will return to me with a radiant face."
"Depart, for towards me you voyage in vain."
