When I saw the palace courts standing empty,

devoid of familiar company, with no noble masters in the dwelling,

I knew for certain that they had departed their abode

and left me behind, with griefs rankling in my heart.

I asked my foolish heart about consolation, though

it is said that even fools sometimes strike true in this world.

It answered, “A feeble counsel—it cannot win my assent.

How could there be consolation when the people of excellence have died?”

O Lord, if I may hope to be near them,

hasten it—for delay is beset with harms.
