They are the beloved, whether unjust or just,

And the masters of my heart, whatever they do.

So let them know that my affection is not changed

By a change in their dispositions, nor by weariness.

And let them withhold blame from my heart through their open-handedness,

For I have rolled up a carpet that reproach spread out.

I deem them too exalted for rain to visit their courtyard,

Or for me to say to them, 'O you who sever ties, restore them.'

So whenever the lightning's light appeared, I said to it,

'Cease, for my heart is occupied with the Nile's lightning.'

So I am blamed for nothing but my infatuation

For loving one who has no substitute in this world.

    أضحت وفردوس أخلاقي لها نزل

    Beloved ones have a place in my heart;

And the paradise of my virtues is now its lodging.

My defense for loving them is made

By an excuse sanctified by love preludes and amorous verse.
