O slope of al-Muqattam, how much we have shed

Of streaming tears along your course!

I stood upon your pebbles' course, letting flow

Over my cheeks the ghada-wood embers of my eyelids.

    ذوت فيك البواذخ من غصوني

    In you, the loftiest of my fortresses have fallen;

In you, the tallest of my branches have withered.

And how many a loved one I have in al-Qarafa,

Nearby, yet held captive by far-reaching separation.

[I] pillow him upon his right hand, though I had hoped

And wished [that] he would pillow me upon mine.

A buried one—what deepened my grief was that I

Thanked him for the buried patience.

I yielded him against my will; once we had been such

That whenever I parted from him, I parted from my faith.

So, O my son, O my liver, know for certain

That your father's certainty has been overcome.

I console my soul for your loss—but how can I find solace,

With a thirst within me for sweet, flowing water?

Though the world has worn away your brow,

My bereavement for you has indeed worn away mine.

As though you, O Muhammad, had never fended off

The onslaughts of the days' calamities on my behalf,

Nor confronted disasters when they beset me,

Your roar then driving them from my den.

Nor had my thoughts been sure that my secret

Was in your keeping, a trust with one trustworthy and faithful.

I was granted you a year after coming of age,

So your years were not far removed from mine.

So, whenever eyes gazed upon us, you were

My brother in every eye, or my peer.

    فآنسني فراقك بالحنين

    I used to see tenderness as weakness of resolve;

So parting from you acquainted me with yearning.

May my ribs never lose their longing for you,

Whose fugitive pangs rise from ambush.

Nor may my breaths ever lack, because of you, a fire

That releases the reserves of guarded tears.
