وباعد إذا لم تنتفع بالأقارب
If Time will not make peace with you, then fight it,
If Time does not make peace with you, then wage war.
and keep your distance when kin are of no use.
And keep your distance if you gain no benefit from relatives.

Never scorn the cunning of the weak; sometimes
And do not scorn the cunning of the weak, for sometimes
vipers die from the venom of scorpions.
Vipers die from the venom of scorpions.

For long ago a hoopoe brought down Bilqis's throne,

Between the alternation of night and dawn lies a battlefield
For in the alternation of night and dawn lies a battlefield,
whose army assails us with wonders.
Its army charges against us with marvels.

The treachery of youth has never startled me, for
Nor did youth's betrayal alarm me, for I
I have grown used to this trait in every companion.
Had grown familiar with this trait in every companion.

A young man’s treachery lurks in his pledge and fidelity,
And a young man's betrayal lies in his pledge and fidelity,
as keen blades betray when their striking edges grow blunt.
And keen swords' betrayal in their edges' failure to bite.

Then protect it from kissing a monk's palm.

I saw men now at banquets
with them—while my fortune alone was among the mourners.
With you, while my plight alone was among mourning women.

Where people spoke through signals of their eyebrows.
