If patience has dwindled, the calamity is great.
Though you say have patience, the affliction is severe,
And if gratitude is great, the reward is immense.
And though you count blessings, the reward is great,

I was bewildered over thanking Time and blaming it;
I was perplexed whether to thank time or blame it,
so after giving thanks, I knew not how to blame.
So I knew not after thanks how to blame.

Time has become praiseworthy in its deeds toward humankind,
Tomorrow time will be praised for its deeds,
yet yesterday I knew it as blameworthy.
While yesterday it was blameworthy to me,

It gladdened hearts after having grieved them;
It delighted hearts after having pained them,
so in every heart are a paradise and a hell.
So in each heart lies paradise and hell.

you, Commander of the Faithful, remain.
You are the Commander of the Faithful, everlasting,

your nearness to us is a paradise and bliss.
Your closeness to us is paradise and bliss.

You inherited guidance by the text from him and his words,

My brother and cousin if you count ancestry,

The Chosen One had already established that precedent for his cousin;
And that Chosen One set a precedent in his cousin,
thus, of your two honors, one is new, one ancient.
So your nobility is original and longstanding.

through which faith grows sound when it is ailing.
Faith is sound even if unsound,

And you have gained, praise be to God, a deal,
binding upon the necks of the faithful.
For which necks of believers are devoted.

That pray for you even without piety or fasting.

They are adversaries for the hotheads of foes.
