    وعادة لي إذا ما قلت لم أمن

    I speak, and truth supports me in what I have said;

    it is my custom, whenever I speak, never to lie.

    I shall surely praise a young man whose noble deeds flow

    through songs of praise as the soul courses through the body.

    The flank of the rhymes sways when I mention him,

    softly, as a sword's spine and a bough sway.

    The words of my verse, from their softness, almost

    grow dewy and drip beauty in praise of Abu al-Hasan.

    And if I pressed their meanings, they would exude nothing

    but the favors he bestowed in days gone by.

    You won my praise and affection after an experience

    that left me no good opinion of the sons of my age.

    Three qualities have distinguished you; since I learned of them,

    I have loved praising you as the eye loves drowsiness.

    وقت يخون أخاه كل مؤتمن

    Among them is your loyalty to the three men at

    a time when every trusted man betrays his brother;

    and your admirable patience on the day of the palace, alone

    before death—oh, would that the day of the palace had never been!

    And your keeping the pledge after death is the third:

    in this, you bound your heart to the companionship of grief,

    until sorrow and grief seemed a creed

    with which you meet God, in private and in public.

    لقد وفيت بحق الفرض والسنن

    Your tears vowed not to cease for a year;

    you have indeed fulfilled the claims of duty and tradition.

    So welcome the ages yet to come with whatever

    will make you forget the anguish of bygone time.

    And trail across the clouds the long hems of robes of honor

    to which you lent the excellence of your unstained honor.

    They have remained buttoned over valor and nobility,

    and not buttoned over miserliness or cowardice.
