I saw you in a dream: you had sent toward me

    a bearer of rain—that is, a cloud.

I took the rain as your bashfulness before me,

    and misread “cloud” as “turban.”

So send me one longer than my reckoning

when I am brought forth on the Day of Resurrection.

And let it not be, O Khatir—may my soul ransom you—

an age-old one that lived to see Qudamah.

Send it, and include the fine linen in it,

like a fair maiden with mischief upon her cheek.

As though its whiteness were a pure face,

and its lovely embroidery a beauty spot upon the cheek.

And do not send its price, for I

regard that as undue trouble and expense.

My only aim is a crown of pride

that heightens stature and protects the head.

    فقل لنداك حي على الإقامة

    This praise is nothing but a call to prayer;

so tell your bounty: “Hasten to the prayer’s commencement!”
