I have a stranger guest's claim to respect, and another claim,
I have the sanctity of the stranger guest and sanctity
through which I harvested, from your presence, the fruits of knowledge.
That I gained from your existence, the fruit of knowledge

سرت بعلاكم وهي أعلى من النجم
And you brought me to places of honor in assemblies
And you brought me into the hearts of assemblies
gladdened by your eminence, loftier than the stars.
I moved with your heights, and it is higher than the star

And smoothing the path for me according to precedent?

For the lightning's smile is of no use
For the smile of lightning is of no use
if its rain does not pour all night upon the earth.
If it does not dwell above the ground towards which it rushes

And how strange that a criminal passed
with things that grieved me, through no sin or crime of mine.
With what hurt me without sin or crime

Affairs that left a bitterness in my soul,
Matters that became in the soul like broken glass
and a fortune into which time cuts down to the bone.
And a fortune that makes time stumble to the bone

And no misfortune befell me through lack of prudence,
And what came to me from lack of wisdom happened
and I have surely been guided to the paths of prudence.
And yet I am led to the paths of wisdom

But it is fate: its vicissitudes take their course
But these are the decrees that lead their ways
upon a man, by choice or against his will.
Over the man whether he chooses them or not

فقل لليالي قد حللت ببرزخ

So tell the nights: I have settled on an isthmus,
So say to the nights that halted at an isthmus
surrounded by two seas whose bounty overflows.
Surrounded by two seas, their abundance flooding

If someone else chooses the sea's shore as a watering place,
If another chose the shore of distress as a harbor
I find the sea's shore on every side of me.
He would find my directions all the shore of distress

And in whichever of their shades I lodge,
And in any shade of them in which I lodged
I see generous favors descending at my bidding.
I saw the arrival of favors by my rule
