وأدعوك والصبر الصحيح سقيم

I confide in you while intrusive sorrow abides.

I implore you while worries persistently linger,

And I call upon you while sound patience is ailing.

And I call upon you while true patience is ill.

قست رأفة الدنيا فلا الدهر عاطف

قست رأفة الدنيا فلا الدهر عاطف

علي ولا عبد الرحيم رحيم

علي ولا عبد الرحيم رحيم

The world's compassion has hardened: time is not kind

The world's mercy has hardened. So time does not show

to me, nor is Abd al-Rahim merciful.

Compassion toward me, nor is the Merciful one merciful.

عفا الله عن آرائه كل فترة

عفا الله عن آرائه كل فترة

كلام العدى فيها علي كلوم

كلام العدى فيها علي كلوم

May God pardon his judgments; at every lapse,

May God forgive him for blocking sustenance

the words of foes are wounds upon me.

With what he has permitted, though speech belittles me.

وسامحه في قطع رزق بفضله

وسامحه في قطع رزق بفضله

وصلت إليه والزمان ذميم

وصلت إليه والزمان ذميم

And may He forgive him for cutting off a livelihood that, through his bounty,

And pardon him for cutting off provision from His bounty,

I attained while the times were wretched.

Which I had attained while time was hurtful.

ألا هل له عطف علي فإنني

ألا هل له عطف علي فإنني

فقير إلى ما اعتدت منه عديم

فقير إلى ما اعتدت منه عديم

Ah, has he any compassion for me? For I am

Oh! Does he have any compassion for me? For I

destitute, in need of what I used to receive from him.

Am poor toward what I was accustomed to being without.

ألا هب لنا من حية الهم رقية

ألا هب لنا من حية الهم رقية

فإنك من ليل السليم سليم

فإنك من ليل السليم سليم

Ah, grant us an incantation against the serpent of sorrow,

Oh! Send us an amulet verse for anxiety's serpent

for you are spared the night of the snake-bitten.

For you are safe from the secure night's darkness.
