I came to your door, to which hopes turn,

I came to your door, hopeful

and found it shut and bolted.

Yet found it closed, unreceptive

فقلت لبوابه سائلاً

فقلت لبوابه سائلاً

أيغلق باب النهى والحجى

أيغلق باب النهى والحجى

So I said to its gatekeeper, asking:

"Is the door of reason and wisdom closed?"

"Does he bar the door of wisdom?"

فقال أراك كثير الكلام

فقال أراك كثير الكلام

وعندي من الرأي أن تخرجا

وعندي من الرأي أن تخرجا

Then he said, "I see you talk a great deal,

He replied: "I see you talk too much

and my opinion is that you should leave.

My advice is that you leave

وإلا نتفت سبال المديح

وإلا نتفت سبال المديح

وألحقتها بسبال الهجا

وألحقتها بسبال الهجا

Or else I will pluck out the moustaches of praise

Else streams of praise will be severed

and attach them to the moustaches of satire."

And join the rivers of satire"
