By the sanctity of lofty virtues, O their father and their peer—

the oath of a man whose custom is to swear truly:

لقد قصرت عما بلغت من العلى

لقد قصرت عما بلغت من العلى

وأحرزته أنباء دهرك والدهر

وأحرزته أنباء دهرك والدهر

truly, they have fallen short of the heights you have reached

and secured—the chronicles of your age, and time itself.

متى كنت يا صدر الزمان بموضع

متى كنت يا صدر الزمان بموضع

فرتبتك العليا وموضعك الصدر

فرتبتك العليا وموضعك الصدر

Whenever you are in a place, O foremost man of the age,

your rank is the highest, and your place at the head.

ولما حضرنا مجلس الأنس لم يكن

ولما حضرنا مجلس الأنس لم يكن

على وجهة إذ غبت أنس ولا بشر

على وجهة إذ غبت أنس ولا بشر

And when we attended the convivial gathering, there was no

fellowship or cheer in any quarter, with you absent.

فقدناك فقدان النفوس حياتها

فقدناك فقدان النفوس حياتها

ولم يك فقد الأرض أعوزها القطر

ولم يك فقد الأرض أعوزها القطر

We missed you as souls miss their life,

not as the earth does when rain fails it.

وأظلم جو الفضل إذ غاب بدره

وأظلم جو الفضل إذ غاب بدره

وفي الليلة الظلماء يفتقد البدر

وفي الليلة الظلماء يفتقد البدر

And the sky of excellence darkened when its full moon vanished;

and on a dark night the full moon is missed.
